On a recent Good Company Gathering Call that I host once a month with my friend Suzanne, Rhonda, one of our regular participants, said, “Not to quote Hillary here, but it really DOES take a village.”

And then we virtually high-five and rejoice with each other when one of us enjoys a success or a victory. Hearing “way to go” and “good on you” puts a smile on each of our collective faces and lifts ALL our spirits.

At the end of each of those calls – when we’ve come to the point that we don’t want it to end but know that each of us have clients to serve and marketing to do – we all leave a little bit smarter, a little more confident, and feeling uplifted to face whatever the rest of our day or week or month will bring.

And at the end of every one of those calls I am reminded of how extremely grateful I am to have this community of people in my life who care about me, and each other, and I fly high for the rest of the day. Anything is possible at that point!

It’s all about community. And teaching.

What I’ve come to realize is that my whole life is about creating community and teaching.

Will you let me pause here a moment and tell you a very short story?

A long time ago I was absolutely in awe of my third grade teacher. I loved the way she taught us things. She read us stories and taught us how to read and write and she made every subject come alive and I knew back then that I wanted very much to be that same kind of teacher. So I would go home at the end of the day and spend the rest of the afternoon teaching a whole classroom full of imaginary students.

My parents would tell you that if you were listening outside my door you’d have thought there was a whole room full of people in my bedroom. I think I was a better student because I was “teaching” all the things I had learned myself that day. I was reinforcing the lessons in me and I didn’t even know it. And I was having an absolute ball.

Well, somewhere along the way I realized that my interests were going to take me in a different direction from teaching school and I’ve been very fortunate to enjoy a successful and fun career all these years doing other things that I absolutely love.

But there was always something missing
for me. And that was teaching.

The desire to teach kept nagging at me so much that one day several years ago — being that it was the new age of the internet — I discovered that I could get on the phone with a bunch of people and teach to my heart’s content about a subject that I really love: marketing a small business.

It was so gratifying to me to know that people who were absolutely afraid of marketing – one student said she was full of marketing angst – could come to my calls, learn that marketing was essential to the success of her business, learn what to do, and that it was not so scary after all (well, maybe a little). And then she started putting the things she learned in to practice and suddenly found herself growing her business in a way that put a huge smile on her face and money in her bank account.

And invariably, at the end of those calls, the people who had come there to learn together and had helped each other and become friends in the process all wanted some way to stay in touch, to keep the learning going, and to keep the support they had felt while in the classes.

So while I was fulfilling my desire to teach and my students were fulfilling their desires to learn how to successfully market their businesses, none of us had that place we could go to keep it all going. So, once again, something was lacking that could make that circle complete.

It’s also about accountability.

Part of the success of getting together with a group of people all learning something together is that we always gently but firmly held each other accountable for what we said we were going to do.

And that worked great for the few weeks that we were all together in class but once class was over and we all went back to our daily routines, it wasn’t quite as easy to get our marketing done, the doubts about whether we were doing it right would haunt us, and the fear that we’d spend money on strategies that might not work kept us awake at nights.

And once again, all of us were back at that place of longing for our classmates and the security, goodwill and camaraderie that we felt in class but with no place to go.

Until now.

One day, it dawned on me – Duh! – that I could actually create such a place. Or maybe it would be better described as a “space.” Maybe a “cloud.”

I thought,

“What if I could create an online community center for people who are in business for themselves, usually all by themselves working from home, but wanting to learn about marketing and managing their business without having to search all over the internet to get what they need and spend a lot of money in the process…

What if I could create a space where people could get together and chat about their challenges, ask questions, get answers and find help, and not feel so alone out there trying to grow a business…

What if I could provide all kinds of self-study programs for those who like to learn on their own at their own pace but still have some support from real people…

What if I could provide classes and workshops – not just once in a while but ALL the time — for those people who learn best in a ‘live’ environment where they can ask questions and get feedback right on the spot…

What if, knowing that success is really an “inside” job, I could also provide support in the areas of self-development that would help those in business balance out the personal side of the equation, too…”

Then I realized: I could do just that! All of it. And selfishly, I knew I could get my OWN needs met there, too. (You see, I teach the things I need to most reinforce in my own business and life and I need other folks to encourage me and tell me that I’m really okay.)

So the Inner Success Circle was born.

It first took shape as a place where I could gather close to me the people that I had had some prior connection with, say in a teleclass or a live workshop. They could come and gather with me in a figurative circle of support. We could keep the learning and the support going. We could learn other new things.

And while the Inner Success Circle is just such a place, it has also come to be the place where one can come to do “inner work.” A place with resources and people to nurture the spirit, the soul, that inner place we all need to go to from time to time to survive in this world and to gather the strength to “keep on keepin’ on” when times get tough.

The Inner Success Circle was created to meet your yearning for knowledge, for community, for support, for nurturance.

It was created for business people like you. People who, like me, believe that business is a higher calling that allows us to impact the world around us in ways that only we can do. And we’ve each chosen a particular business to make that happen.
